Juvenile red tail hawk drying its wings

A resident red tail hawk often bathes in the creek near the main entry ramp, then sits on a nearby fence post to dry its wings.

Other fascinating birds move through Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and the surrounding area during the fall migration, so pack binoculars for your autumn visits.

While the reef is the obvious hot spot for sea life exploration, the reserve bluffs west of the airport and the marsh adjoining Pillar Point Harbor are good for birding. Click for a map.

This entry in the Nature Conservancy blog last week had some advice about fall birding.

Monitoring Marine Protected Areas

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve lies at the heart of a larger Marine Protected Area (MPA), Montara State Marine Reserve, which was established on May 1, 2010. Click here for a PDF map.

Scientists are now at work monitoring MPAs to try to determine their effectiveness at replenishing fish populations. KQED Quest’s blog has a great article with an embedded 9-minute video showing some of these researchers in action. Some of the underwater footage gives us a glimpse of what lies beyond the shallow tidepools of our reef (including a pretty big octopus!):
