Tax-deductible contributions from individuals and corporations enable us to train volunteers to provide school children with meaningful hands-on experiences with nature, involve the general public in learning about marine stewardship through our popular Family Fun Days, and award several scholarships to local high school students interested in pursuing marine science degrees.

Become a Volunteer
Our volunteer naturalists lead tours of the intertidal environment, help with Family Fun Day events, and interact with members of the public to bring the wonders of the reserve to life and foster a sense of stewardship. Our volunteers help the San Mateo County Department of Parks protect our rich and unique intertidal environment.
Our volunteers interact with school children and the general public visiting FMR.
Weekday volunteers lead tours for school groups. Weekend volunteers lead tours or interact with drop-in visitors.
Volunteers are expected to volunteer a minimum of three times a month during the busy season (January thru June), and twice a month the rest of the year. Docents must be physically capable to navigate the rocks and reef and be over 17 years old.
Our training class for becoming a volunteer naturalist covers marine biology, ecology, and interpretive strategies, and runs Saturdays from mid-January through mid-March. Click here to get more information or sign up!
If you missed the class but still want to help out, there are volunteer opportunities that do not require naturalist training. These include contributing photos and articles to our web site, handling sales of gift items in the ranger station, and running beach cleanups.
